Experience

In 1971, I lost my dad to heart disease. He was only 52 years old.

In 1981, I lost my mom to heart disease. She was only 62 years old.

I decided I needed to help make a difference.  In 1984, I joined the Lakeside Rescue Squad in Richmond, Virginia.

From 1984 to 1994, I felt riding with the rescue squad was the right thing for me to do, but something was still missing. I just couldn't put my finger on it.

I began to teach swimming and lifeguarding at the Tuckahoe YMCA.  As part of the lifeguarding curriculum I also taught Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED and Bloodborne Pathogens. I taught these lifesaving skills to hundreds of students.

One day during my class at the Y, "MAN DOWN!" - a YMCA member was in cardiac arrest on the basketball court. We performed two-person CPR until he was brought back and was breathing on his own. By this time the rescue squad had arrived and he was transported to the hospital. He survived.

That's when I knew how I could make a difference, and so can you!

Learn Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED and, if applicable to your career choice include Bloodborne Pathogens to your skillset. American Red Cross classes make a difference in your life and the life of everyone around you.
